Three Considerations for Stress-Free Roll-Up Door Installation

A metal roll-up door is generally easy to install, but common mistakes can create significant challenges. Keeping these three considerations in mind can help make installation issue-free.

Level the Brackets

Place brackets level and at an even height, on both sides of the door frame. Because the bracket is designed to support the full weight of the door, the door will lean to one side when opened, or cone when closed if installed incorrectly. Coning occurs when the sheet gathers into an uneven roll around the barrel, and this will reduce the life of the door and even damage the steel.

Brackets must be level and the tension in the springs must be balanced for best roll-up sheet door performance.

Match the Guides

Ensure guides match with the corresponding door model for proper engagement and, like the brackets, distance them appropriately. If the distance between the guides is less than the width of the sheet, the door will bind and drag. Alternatively, if the guides are placed at a greater distance, the door will not fit securely, putting undue pressure on the wind locks and affecting the wind rating.

Balance the Springs

Lastly, balance the spring tension. If wound too tight, the tension in the spring will cause the door to slam up dangerously, possibly damaging the sheet and door components. Without enough tension, the spring cannot provide the support needed to assist the user in opening the door. In either instance, an unbalanced spring is a safety hazard.

Keeping these considerations in mind will make roll-up door installation stress free. It’s always recommended to hire a qualified door expert who is familiar with the process and product. On average, an experienced installer can install a standard door in less than an hour.
